May 2010: Cloud Rising 2

To play, move the mouse to move your guy, collect as many clouds as you think you need then hold down the mouse button to boost.

Get Adobe Flash player

The main thing I wanted to gain from this game was to provide a complete game experience within 60 seconds, hence the time limit. However, I think I may have messed up the balance of time spent collecting clouds vs time spent boosting – at the moment the ratio is about 50/50 which means you’ll ideally spend the last 30 seconds of the game just holding down the mouse button.

Another thing is the performance is very sketchy on some computers. It seems like Flash doesn’t handle totally smooth animation all that well when there is other stuff going on (or at least I couldn’t figure out how to make it smooth), so the clouds moving down on the screen can look quite jittery. My main solution was to make the game run at 120fps which (for some reason) makes it look a lot smoother than 60fps, but of course some peoples’ computers couldn’t handle that, so the game seemed slower than it should be for them. I hate technical issues.

This game ended up being quite simple. Perhaps with an upgrade/progression mechanic, a reworking of the time spent boosting, more cloud variety, it could be quite good? What do you think?
